THE GOOD
— Birthright, as a series, scratches an itch that I didn’t know I had. What does happen when the child hero comes back from his adventure? What are the consequences on the family and the world he left behind. Great questions to base a series around. Also the fact that there is a good element of family drama keeps things entertaining.
Reading this comic is an experience. I am never really sure quite what is going on. I mean, I understand the premise and the plot, but the characters are a mystery. That is something that I really enjoy. Williamson paces this comic really well. There is enough in each issue and reading in trade is great.
The art is this book is phenomenal. Bressan’s pencils are stellar. There is a rough grungy feel to his art and Lucas’s colors make it all shine. Really interesting contrast that makes reading the book a great experience.
There were some really touching moments here. Mikey’s mom reads through Mikey’s journal. We learn how birthdays are celebrated in Terrenos. And learn a but more about Terrenos and its magics.
THE BAD
— Paneling in this issue bugged me. Williamson works really well with his panels to not put too much on a page and keep it simple. I had to read pages a few times to understand the movements and actions, almost like the actions of characters were too far spaced out.
THE VERDICT
— Birthright continues to be a spectacular read. Writing, art, and colors are all top notch. This issue sets up some really interesting things for future issues. Each of the main parties in highlighted and prepped for what is to come.
