The Good
I am proud that Jeff Lemire is Canadian. It always excites me to hear that comic creators I look up to are from the Great White North. Besides that, Descender is a world that is fascinating. Even though only three issues have come out, the world and characters feel so well developed, so organic, and alive. Each character is unique and intriguing. The plot up to this point has been quick, issue one of Descender set up the conflict and the world and presented us with Tim-21, the series lovable protagonist. Issue two gives us Tim-21's backstory and an awesome interaction between two parties. Issue three catches us up to the present dilemma the characters find themselves in. I love the twists and turns this series has already taken in such a short amount of time. Things have happened that I would not have thought would have happened so early on in a series.
Dustin Nyugen does an amazing job on the art. The water colours give the series a look of calm and collectiveness. There is some more clever techniques used in issue three similar to issue two. The messy lines also help with the tone of the book. It's like reading something that is slipping away, like this world is slowly dying. That's how I feel at least.
The Bad
Because the art is messy, that can sometimes cause difficulties reading. There was a panel of Quon that looked horrible! That is my only beef.
The Verdict
This issue is awesome. It was a great read. Lemire does great work with characters. Also the developments with Tim-21 give the series a great twist so early on. The last page drops a bomb that is going to be fun to see unravel. Nyugen does great work with lines and colours that help the tone and reading experience but can cause trouble. I am hooked and want to see how this story keeps growing and paying off. Great job Jeff and Dustin.
