THE GOOD
— Goodness me, I love this comic book. I didn’t understand the plot at first. Hickman is very slow burn and very cerebral. It takes a while for things he writes to come together. I still don’t understand his Avengers run. Now, East of West takes a clever idea and meshes it will awesome science fiction and doses it out in sweet heroine-like issues.
Issue 19 focuses on little Babylon as he explores the great outdoors. Balloon has some lessons to teach and is putting Babylon through the school of hard knocks. There are some awesome dialogue pieces here. Babylon and Balloon’s relationship is the most interesting and dynamic in this book. There is always some interesting things being said.
The art as always is great. I don’t know how Dragotta is able to deliver such cartoonish characters in a way that gives me shivers. His designs for the creatures that Babylon encounters in this book are so fascinating. The reality/fallen vision that Babylon has is always so interesting and helps tell the story so well. Frank Martin. I don’t think I would care about this book as much if someone else were coloring it. Frank Martin’s colors make this book an epic.
The sequences and pacing of this issue puts it at the top of all East of West issues. What Ballon teaches Babylon is interesting for their situation and I cannot wait to see what comes after the last page.
THE BAD
— Honestly. Nothing. Usually there is some beef about a Hickmanism in East of West. This issue: amazing.
THE VERDICT
— Read East of West! The trades are out. The series is easy to digest with so many issues of story out. I am planning to pick up the hardcover in June. This series needs to go on forever. Babylon evolves a lot, Ballon is Balloon. Also this cover is awesome. I think people should take a good look at it. Really well done. Top notch.
